  • A domain name is a name that you can choose yourself.
  • A domain name can be specific to your business, or one that is unique, or catchy — A name that people will quickly remember because of its individuality.
  • There are host service providers that will allow you to use your domain name on their servers instead of using their server name as part of your URL
How much does it cost and where do you get a domain name?
  • A domain name can be purchased online from BuyDomains.com
  • The charge for a domain name is — $16.
    • Buy a NEW name — Pay for 2 years in advance: Total $32.
    • Transfer OLD name from another registrar — Pay for 1 year in advance: Total $16 for each year.

    • All features: fantastic technical support available by E-mail or toll-free 24/7, easy access control panel so that you can make whatever changes you want, whenever you want them.  With the control panel you can also see the progress of your transfer and/or purchase.  Other features include: redirection, frame-forwarding, E-mail aliases, and more.  (Trust me, you get what you pay for. I rather have someone that is there 24/7 to help me fix my problems and not have to wait and waste time to call only during certain hours which are determined by the registrar and not me!!
Why would I want to spend extra money to purchase a domain name?
  • The domain name will be unique to you and your company
  • If you include a keyword of your business in the domain name, it will be just one more way for the search engines to index your site and visitors find you on the fly
  • You can purchase the name of your company or any catchy name that you choose to associate your business or project with (if available)
  • Easy for clients, prospective clients, and those you meet by chance to remember you by
  • NOTE:  If your company/project has a number of connected sites/URLs, you can have a simple domain name and use it just as an index/gateway to lead visitors/prospective clients to all of them simply.  This way, if you meet someone by chance, you can reference only one site instead of confusing the issue and overwhelming them, and yourself, with a number of sites and URLs.  I did this myself, and it is much easier for them and me.
Why would I choose to pay for a web page hosting service as opposed to a free service?
  • Pay domain hosts offer additional services that most free hosts do not provide.
    • secure server for sending private information such as credit card info
    • shopping carts for selling items as well as having clients pay for your services
    • more recognition from the search engines (Some free hosting sites are banned from certain search engines and take longer to have pages submitted to them.)
    • no banner ads or links required from the pay host (As an incentive, most hosts will give you a percentage off your monthly rate if you will fly their banner!)
    • faster, more dependable customer service (You really need to investigate before signing up with a new domain host provider!)
    • faster, more dependable servers (less downtime!)
    • more credibility for a business site (Some free hosts now provide domain name accommodations; however, you still have all the same drawbacks that the free hosts offer, such as: mandatory banners, or bars across the top of each screen, slow servers, and no alert for downtime.)
